Cirque du Soleil Alegria was an award-winning Cirque du Soleil touring production, created in 1994 by director Franco Dragone and director of creation Gilles Ste-Croix. It was one of Cirque du Soleil’s most popular touring shows. Alegría means happiness in Spanish, the show name meaning ‘Joy’ in English.
A brief history of Cirque du Soleil
In 1984, eight young Quebec circus performers shared a dream of representing their art form in its purest form. They banded together to create Les Échassiers – in French, the stilts. This troupe helped pave the way for today’s internationally acclaimed Cirque du Soleil. In fact, more than half of today’s artists with Cirque have at one time performed with Les Échassiers. Their magic and expertise can be seen throughout every show, from Cirque Du Soleil Paramour, Michael Jackson the Immortal World Tour and Mamma Mia! To West life: Come Fly with Me and Zaia – All Elements.

Should you see it? Our take on it
We just saw Cirque du Soleil’s touring production of Alegría and we recommend it. The story isn’t going to blow you away, but there are several solid performances from an impressive cast. You’ll want to stay until after they’ve cleared up and cleaned off everything because there are some great transitions that take place when they finish packing it all away. There’s also quite a bit of energy put into playing with your senses, which is pretty cool if you’re into that sort of thing. Some will like how extravagant it is while others will find it unnecessary; either way, we think you should give it a shot if you’ve got even a passing interest in circus acts or similar shows. Plus, tickets are very affordable ($35-90).
